Preperation for your CT
Preparation for your CT will depend on the type of scan you are having and whether contrast is required. Most CT scans require very little preparation, while some may have specific instructions to follow beforehand.
Please see the information below and follow the preparation relevant to your scan. If you are unsure, our friendly team will let you know what you need to do when your appointment is made.

Preparing for a Non-Contrast CT
Most CT scans that do not require contrast need little to no preparation.
You can generally eat, drink and take your usual medications as normal before your appointment, unless our team has given you specific instructions for your scan.
Please wear comfortable clothing where possible and remove any jewellery or metal objects from the area being scanned.
When you arrive, our team will confirm your details and explain the scan before getting started.
Additional Preparation for a Contrast CT
If your CT requires IV contrast, please follow the general CT preparation above, plus the following instructions.
Our team will complete a contrast screening and consent form with you when your appointment is made.
Please drink plenty of water before your appointment.
You do not need to have a full bladder; however, being well hydrated can help make cannulation easier.
If you are having a CT of the abdomen, you will need to fast for 4 hours before your appointment. You may continue to drink water during this time.
On the day of your scan, a small cannula will be placed into a vein in your arm so the contrast can be administered during your CT.
